MYRA MAY (MAY) LUND

Myra May Lund, Known as May, was born 20/9/1910 at 3 Queen Street Barnoldswick in the West Riding of Yorkshire. Her parents were,

Joseph Lund (1881-1940) and Eva Lund nee Woffenden (1885-1933)

May was the fourth child born to the family, and already had 3 siblings; Wilfred Willis Lund (1904-1905) Joseph Richard Lund (1906-1907) and Horace Lund (1908-1975) preceding her. However tragedy had befallen the family previously with the passing of both Wilfred Willis aged 8 months and Joseph Richard aged 10 months. Horace however thrived and went on to survive his younger sister, eventually passing in 1975  having reached the age of 67 yrs. May would go on to have a sister, Elsie Lund (1915-1989) and another brother, Wilfred Lund (1912-1912) Sadly tragedy was to strike the family again when Wilfred passed at the age of just 6 months.

The family moved to no 4 Skipton Rad, Barnoldswick in the middle of 1912 and in the early 1930's the family were to be found in the seaside town of Blackpool, where Joseph is listed as the proprietor of a Boarding House at no 99 Coronation Street in the resort.

The Boarding House was named "Evadene" after Mays mother Eva.  During the second world war "Evadene" was one of many such Boarding Houses and Hotels used to billet Royal Air Force recruits during their training. Blackpool was chosen as the main training location for the Royal Air Force and the amount of accommodation available to house the recruits was a major deciding factor. This along with its location being the furthest suitable place from the south coast of England and therefore considered to be out of reach of the German bombers of the time.   The building, at 99 Coronation Street  exists to this day, but has now transformed into a small hotel, renamed the Arden Hotel.

On 11/5/1940, May now aged 29, was married to Frederick (Fred) Williams aged 28 and a motor lorry driver from Barnoldswick. The couple were married at the Spiritualist Church on Albert Road in the centre of Blackpool. Sadly her Mother, Eva, never got to see either of her Daughters married as she passed in 1933

This photograph taken 11/5/1940 at May and Freds wedding, shows May and Fred in the centre with Elsie to Freds right and Horace Lund far right with his wife Gladys Lund nee Hodgson on his right. Photo taken outside the Spiritualist Church in Blackpool.

By 1954 Fred was employed as a semi skilled engineer at Rolls Royce and the family were living at 5 John Street, Barnioldswick and it was here that Myra May passed on 25/7/1959 at the age of 48 the cause being certified by Dr J W Pickard as Abdominal Carcinomatosis /  Cancer of the Ovaries. Following cremation May's ashes were interred in this grave.
